Marc Kiner, CPA, is a co-founder of the National Social Security Advisor (NSSA^®) Certificate program and a new NAIFA member as of early March.

Over his three-decade career as a CPA, Kiner grew increasingly interested in the inner workings of Social Security benefits. In 2008, he bought three books on Social Security, read them cover to cover, and emerged with more questions than answers. So, he sought out an expert and was referred to Jim Blair, then the District Manager of the Piqua, OH, Social Security office. Blair worked for SSA for 35 years before retiring on December 31, 2010.

When attempting to form a LILI Class this year, the overwhelming response we heard from our members was this year just wasn’t in the cards. However, we also continued to hear that there was a high interest in participating next year. We heard you and we are excited to share that next year’s Ohio LILI Class registration is now live! This in-person course will be led by fellow NAIFA-Ohio members who are graduates of the program. Earlier this month, NAIFA-Ohio members Tracy Cartwright, Loyal Member since 2007, and Elie Harriett, ChHC, Loyal Member since 2004, provided testimony on the impact of HB 675. HB 675 aims to prohibit the Superintendent of Insurance from prohibiting certain forms of solicitation of Medicare supplement policies.

NAIFA is currently accepting nominations for NAIFA Quality Awards (NQA), NAIFA Diversity Champion Award, Advisor Today’s 4 Under 40, Terry Headley Lifetime Defender Award, YAT Leader of the Year, and John Newton Russell. All award deadlines are July 31, 2022.

NAIFA-Ohio honored three chapter members with awards at their 2022 Success Summit. Matthew Meeker, CLU, ChFC, CLTC, and James Fuller, LUTCF, received the NAIFA-OH Political Involvement Award and Daniel Brookman, LUTCF, was named the 2021 NAIFA-OH Young Advisor of the Year.

“We are pleased to recognize Matthew Meeker, James Fuller, and Daniel Brookman,” said NAIFA-OH President Tracy Cartwright. “Their talent, energy, and dedication provide a shining example of how insurance and financial professionals make a meaningful difference in NAIFA, in their communities, and in the lives of their clients. Matthew, Daniel, and outstanding NAIFA members like them are the reason NAIFA will continue to be the largest, most influential, and most successful membership association for financial professionals in the United States.” 

Scott Blake, MBA, knows the value of political advocacy. After a career in the political sphere, he now works to protect the interests of Main Street Americans as well as insurance and financial professionals.

From Politics to Financial Services

Blake transitioned from politics to financial services at the suggestion of his own financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual. Now, he's also a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. Working primarily with upwardly mobile millennials, Blake says he likes helping driven, motivated people achieve their dreams and goals. He talks about one such instance when he helped a millennial client buy their first home. “It's about serving your client. I get to wish for the best for them and help them achieve their dreams.” That's his favorite part of being a financial advisor—he gets to be everyone’s cheerleader.

NAIFA-Ohio was recently represented at the Ohio House Republican Caucus Leadership Fundraiser by Tracy Cartwright, President of NAIFA Ohio. Tracy, pictured with Speaker Bob Cupp (R-Lima), had the opportunity to speak with several members of the House majority caucus, including NAIFA member Rep. Brian Lampton (R-Beavercreek) and talk about the good work NAIFA is doing for Ohioans and the importance of a stable, predictable insurance and financial regulatory market here in the Buckeye State. NAIFA Ohio and its members will continue to represent the industry and its members to ensure that our members are able to provide the best products and services to our clients.”

It has been busy season at the Ohio Statehouse these past few months – the first half in the House, followed by Senate consideration of the two-year operating budget proposal for FY ’22-23, HB 110. Wednesday afternoon, June 9th, the Ohio Senate completed work on its version of the budget bill with passage on a party-line vote, 25-8. Then the very next day, Thursday, June 10th, as expected, the House voted not to concur on Senate changes, thus sending the budget bill to Conference Committee to work out the differences between the two chambers along with the Governor’s introduced proposal as well. This process is scheduled to be finalized and agreed upon by both chambers and then signed into law by the Governor by June 30th, absent a few line-item vetoes. The Senate’s version added many new projects and funded several new programs. Highlights of the many new provisions include:

First, on behalf of the team at ZHF Consulting, thank you for the opportunity to represent NAIFA-Ohio before the General Assembly and the Ohio Department of Insurance. It is our honor to be tasked with promoting the work of NAIFA-Ohio members and make sure decision makers in state government know about the positive impact the men and women of NAIFA-Ohio make on their communities.

The Ohio Department of Insurance has finalized a rule based on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ updated Suitability in Annuity Transactions Model that requires financial professionals to work in the best interests of consumers on annuity transactions. The new rule goes into effect in Ohio on Feb. 14.
